Recycling just one tonne of new and uncoated printing and office paper spares four cubic metres of waste going to landfill. In addition, it saves around 24 trees, more than two barrels of oil, 41,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, and 31,870 litres of water from having to be used.
Recycling one tonne of glass saves more than the equivalent weight in raw materials, including sand, limestone, and soda ash, and cuts energy use by 30 per cent because crushed glass melts at a lower temperature. More than 800 kg of greenhouse gases are saved by recycling one tonne of steel cans. Aluminium cans made from recycled cans requires 95 per cent less energy than producing them new from raw bauxite.
